A Lagoon & Forest Blend

Happy New Year, everyone! I hope everyone had a peaceful and warm holiday. I have a mixed-media art piece to share today. I used the palette from the Colorful Options Challenge, January 2024 for the inspiration.

I started the artwork on a 6×6 canvas using Strathmore’s Acrylic Paper, introducing textural elements with Distress Grit Paste Snowfall along the edges. Once this was dry, I applied a layer of white gesso to the surface. Using a palette of Distress Paints, including Kitsch Flamingo, Lumberjack Red, Stormy Sky, Prize Ribbon, and Salvaged Patina, I covered the background and let it dry. Not finding the exact shade of purple I desired, I crafted a custom blend using Lumberjack Red, Stormy Sky, and Prize Ribbon.

My next step was a whitewash using Picket Fence, followed by dry brushing the edges with Villaneous Potion, applied with a brayer. The last step on my background was sporadically sponging a bit more white.  After the surface dried, I employed a mushroom stencil, spray-painting it in black, and applied a shimmering glaze in shades of blue, green, and violet. For the undersurface of the mushrooms, I used a combination of the aforementioned paints, anchoring them with a grass base to avoid the appearance of floating.

The final touch involved framing the artwork in a simple black frame, rendering it ready for display.
